Second training course on symmetry and group theory

Tsukuba, Japan, 9-13 March 2015

In the framework of the International Year of Crystallography

The participants were expected to know basic matrix algebra (how to multiply matrices and vectors, how calculate determinant and trace of a matrix: however, an optional half-day is devoted to revise these notions), fundamental electromagnetism (waves, diffraction) and basic chemistry.

The training course spanned five full days, from 9 to 13 March, 2015. Monday (March 9) morningwas optional for participants needing to revise general concepts about matrix algebra (vectors and matrices, matrix multiplication, calculation of determinant and trace, transpose and inverse matrices). These concepts will be extensively used during the exercises: it is therefore mandatory that all participants are able to perform simple matrix calculations.

Exercices proposed during the whole course were integral part of the course: participants actively participated to solve the proposed exercises. Evening sessions were also proposed for discussion, practicals, solution to the exercises, questions & answers.

Didactic material was distributed during the lectures and also made available in electronic form.

Monday, 9 March

Tuesday, 10 March (9 a.m. - 6 p.m.)

Wednesday, 11 March (9 a.m. - 6 p.m.)

Thursday, 12 March (9 a.m. - 6 p.m.)

Friday, 13 March (9 a.m. - 6 p.m.)

Coffee break was served at 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Lunch break was from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Dinner from 6 p.m.

The official language of the training course was Japanese. No simultaneous interpretation was provided.

The training course has been held at the KEK 4th bulding, seminar room (M02 on the map).

The Organizers of the trainng course have observed the basic policy of non-discrimination and affirmed the right and freedom of scientists to associate in international scientific activity without regard to such factors as citizenship, religion, creed, political stance, ethnic origin, race, colour, language, age or sex, in accordance with the Statutes of the International Council for Science. At this course no barriers existed which would have prevented the participation of bona fide scientists.
